Your 1st step in becoming Certified

The primary function of the Interim Certification Board is to provide an operating structure for the certification of Environmental Assessment Practitioners.

Prior to establishing the Interim Certification Board there was no means of certification available for environmental practitioners who do not have a natural science background.

This deficiency has become a matter of serious concern to the environmental profession.

There has been a rapid growth in the number of environmental practitioners entering the environmental assessment field.

The need to uphold professional standards and provide some level of assurance about the quality of environmental assessment work is underlined, and the imperative for certification grows.

FINAL DRAFT PROPOSAL FOR COMMENT
(Feb 2009)

The Working Group mandated by National Stakeholders presents the Final Draft Proposal for the Establishment of the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA) for comment.
After comments have been received and the Constitution of EAPASA has been finalised, the Working Group, the ICB and all other interested national stakeholders will resolve to form EAPASA. A Board will be nominated and selected and this Board will apply to the Minister for recognition in terms of S24H of NEMA. Should the Minister decide to recognise EAPASA, a date will be published by which all practicing EAPs must be registered. This date will provide for a reasonable phase-in period.
The Final Draft Proposal can be downloaded here or requested via Glaudin Kruger (PO Box 599, Onrusrivier, 7201, Tel 028 316 2905, Fax 088 028 316 2905, Email kruger@kruger-associates.com). All other relevant documentation, including previous drafts and comments, presentations and communications, is also available.
Please ensure that your comments are submitted no later than 20 March 2009.

Target Launch Date
The target date to launch the certification process is the 1 October 2001.

ICB's Progress
The Interim Certification Board (ICB) for Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs) has made good progress since its inception in February 2001. The various working groups have been kept hard at work during this period on the many issues needing to be tackled.

There have been many discussions on the criteria for certification, the certification process, the use of sponsors and referees, as well as on the constitution of the ICB. Much work has gone into such issues as how to market and fund certification, equity and redress, education, liaison with government bodies and - in particular - bodies responsible for generating standards for environmental science and management.

Support & Endorsement
The number of bodies from different disciplinary backgrounds who have shown support for certification is heartening!

Having such variety in the ICB has added immense value to discussions around environmental assessment and certification, both to the ICB and to member organisations whose horizons are broadening with each and every meeting.

List of Referees drawn up
A list of referees who can be used to sponsor certification applicants has been drawn up, based on nominations of suitably competent and qualified individuals from each of the ICB member organisations.
